A Family Portrait In September {2016}

I feel like September arrived and disappeared in a flash. I had been anxious about September’s arrival, it marked a huge amount of change for our little family. In Spring we made the difficult decision to move schools to a smaller, brand new school opening nearby. James and Lily were really settled and happy at their old school, which made the decision all the more difficult.

Amy was also due to start nursery, she has been to a nursery when she was 2 years old for around 6 months which she loved but she found the transition hard to start with, and she had broken sleep for around six months, something I wasnt looking forward to repeating… Amy has now been at school for 2 weeks and she loves it, after a few tears on day 3 she barely notices that I leave now, she just wonders off!

With a brand new school, no one really knows what to expect, but we couldn’t be more happy with our decision. All the staff are friendly, professional and approachable, from the headteacher to the admin, caretakers and kitchen staff. More importantly you can see that they put the children first, I can see that they are already getting to know their characters, how they learn and what motivates them in just a few short weeks.

Chaotic weather, colds and a cranky mummy.

The weather hasn’t quite decided what it wanted to do this September, we had some autumnal mornings where it was so cold our heating clicked on, followed by afternoons that were so hot that I put suncream on the children. My Grandma always used to say that the change in weather caused lots of colds and illness and she was usually right.

We have had one illness after another, and its been completely exhausting. At the same time Ava has been teething too, we have been up 5-6 times a night for over 2 weeks just with her. This was mostly to comfort her through the pain, or because she’s hungry because she’s not eating properly because of the teeth that are cutting through. She has had a cold too, and I am amazed at how much snot one small child can produce.

Who needs sleep? ‘Sleeps for the weak’, right? Or is that ‘I could sleep for a week’…

We went into what I affectionately call ‘survival mode’ where we just aim to do nothing other than keep the house looking reasonable, feed the children, avoid leaving the house and sleep as much as possible. We have done impressively well, but may need to go shopping soon, Mother Hubbard would be proud of our cupboard!

A little blog makeover.

I decided it was time to have a little blog refresh, and I’ve redesigned my logo, and updated my fonts and colours, and I am really pleased with the outcome! I love the colours and I feel like its much more ‘me’ than it was before.

I read an interesting post from Tim at Slouching Towards Thatcham about creating a personal brand, which I thought was timely; One of the things Tim talks about is consistancy, my main aim over the next few months is to be more consistent, especially now Amy is in nursery and I have a bit more spare time.

The amazing Donna from WhatTheRedheadSaid has also given me some really helpful blog advice. I have plans to amend and write a few new pages for my blog, some of which I have been avoiding for a few months, but now I am looking forward to writing!

Next Month

October brings Halloween, the children love Halloween and I cant wait to plan lots of decorations and crafts and food.

From Growing to Sewing…

I have far too many hobbies, but our allotment & growing take up a fair amount of my time in spring and summer. The growing season is really slowing now and in the next few weeks we will have harvested most of our crops. In autumn and winter I have more time to decorate, and be a little bit more creative. I want to learn how to make my own clothes this winter as well as spending time knitting & crocheting.

This Months Family Photo

Last month I had six different sets of photos to choose from, but with all the illness this month we took these at the very last moment, just before the school run. This definitely is not our best photo, but its pretty good considering we had been up most of the night with poor Ava.

What I love about this photo is that it really shows our family, just as we are and it captures some of the normality of our lives, whilst the holiday snaps and photographs from days out are amazing – this ordinary, everyday photo of us sat on our sofa is special in its own way too.

Other Photos

The fun one. Ava clearly is wondering how on earth she got landed with such a crazy family.

This photo shows some of the chaos of life with four littles, I love Amy’s cheeky face and that Ava is demanding that its her turn with the clicker!

This slightly blurry photo would have been perfect if I was smiling. What a miserably mummy – but just look at Ava’s smile!

My favourite memories from September

I hope everyone has a fantastic October, see you next month.

I wonder if there’s a grain of truth in your grandmother’s theory – September always seems ripe for the return of coughs and colds doesn’t it. I’m so glad the children are enjoying their new school – we changed Kitty into a new school this year and it’s such a hard leap of faith isn’t it, though fortunately one that seems to be paying off!

I think maybe you are right and there is something in her theory, its definitely more noticeable with three children in school! Changing schools is a huge worry isn’t it? I am really glad that Kitty loves her new school too. xx

So many lovely family photos ๐Ÿ™‚ I really like your blog design too, I am in the middle of doing mine, it is so tricky I am not a natural at the techie stuff! Glad to hear your little ones are settling in well at their new school x #meandmineproject

Thank you. I think I am the opposite, I find the techie stuff easy, but I don’t think I am very good at writing or with social media! If i can ever help at all with the techie side I would be happy to, just give me a shout ๐Ÿ™‚
